Finance Paperwork with Glasses

Whether you’re looking for a two-door muscle car, a full-size pickup truck, or a three-row SUV, we’re confident you can find something to love in our lineup! If you’re leasing a vehicle from us and your lease term is coming to an end soon, you’re probably wondering about your lease-end options. While you can upgrade to a newer model or find something else in our inventory, you can also buy out your leased vehicle! The finance team at Group 1 Chevrolet Estero Bay has more details on how to calculate a car lease buyout in the guide below.

Lease-End Buyouts vs. Early Lease Buyouts

There are two main different types of lease buyouts to be aware of a standard lease-end buyout and an early lease buyout. Before calculating a lease buyout, it’s important that you know the difference between these two types. Here’s how each buyout works:

  • Lease-end buyouts: You’ll be able to negotiate a better buyout deal if your lease is ending soon. The dealer may offer you a lower buyout price if they think you’re going to sell the vehicle back to them eventually.
  • Early lease buyout: Some drivers are interested in ending their lease prematurely by buying the vehicle out. This gives the dealership a bit more leverage since they know you have an incentive to get out of your lease early, so you might not get as good a deal.

Should You Buy Out Your Lease?

Your monthly statements will include a section titled “Buyout Amount” or “Payoff Amount.” This includes the residual value of your vehicle determined at the beginning of the lease, as well as factors like the remaining payment amount and the potential purchase fee. This will give you a good idea of your car’s buyout value, but if you don’t see it on your statement, then you can calculate it yourself:

  • Determine the vehicle’s residual value. Even if the buyout amount isn’t listed, your vehicle’s residual value should be reflected in your lease contract. The residual value is the estimated amount that your vehicle will be worth at the end of your lease.
  • Compare the two values. Your car’s actual value may be higher than its estimated value, which means it would be in your best interest to buy out the current lease. If the actual value is lower than the estimated value, you might be able to negotiate a different price.
  • Account for any fees: In addition to your vehicle’s value, you’ll want to factor in fees like transfer costs, licensing and registration fees, penalty fees, and any other fees associated with buying out a lease.
  • Account for sales tax. Finally, keep in mind the local sales tax rate and factor that into your calculation. You should be able to find this rate on your local DMV site or your state government’s site.
